John Phillips joined the Oakland coaching staff as a volunteer assistant starting in the 2009 season. Phillips is well known in the Michigan soccer community for his work with the Vardar Soccer Club, the Michigan Gators and the state Olympic Development program.

A former professional soccer player with the Detroit Neon of the Continental Indoor Soccer League, Phillips continues to develop young players in Michigan through his work at Vardar Academy, where he has been coaching since 2005.

Phillips began his coaching career as the youth coordinator of the Troy Premier Soccer Association from 1994-2001. He then worked with the Michigan Gators as both Boys Director of Coaching and Youth Director of Coaching from 2001-05. Phillips holds a a United States Soccer Federations (USSF) National "B" license in addition to a USSF National Youth Coaching License.

Prior to joining the Neon, Phillips played collegiate soccer at Siena Heights University.
